Making Birthdays Special

March 27, 2009

For as far back as I can remember, before I married my dh, my mom always made each one of my, as well as my siblings, birthday cakes.  It was so special, and we couldn’t wait to see what she had created for us on our very special day!

Now that I have my own children, I do the same for them.  The look on their sweet little faces makes it so worth it!  It doesn’t matter if it is just something simple or if I “went all out”, they love it just the same.  They do not have the “normal” birthday party, but it is special, nonetheless.  It is just our little family, but we still have balloons, gifts, special meals chosen by the birthday girl/boy, we still sing Happy Birthday and make as many memories as we can.  And now the older children get to pick one place that they want to go on their birthday, Chuck E. Cheese is usually the winner, and we take the little ones to the park on their special day!  But even with all of that, the cake is still their favorite part!

EK just celebrated her 2nd birthday 2 1/2 weeks ago, and as it always goes, they were all anxious to see what the cake (or cupcakes) were going to look like.  I really think that Dh shares their excitement, even though he doesn’t say so, I can see it in his eyes and the way he peeks over my shoulder as I work.  I am so blessed to have them in my life, and to be able to do something so simple, yet so special for them.

What GREAT memories you are making with your dc. I love making the kids cakes each year. Hey there is a idea for a near future Tightwad Tuesday or Show and Tell Friday show pics of the cakes I have done. I REALLY like your cupcake cake. I need to keep my eyes open for something like that. It is so festive ! Your cupcakes are just perfect for the festivities. I hope you join us again and again.

What fun memories you are creating! I love the cupcakes! By the way, don’t you just love family birthday parties? They can be so much more special then the chaotic “normal” parties. Keep up the good work, mom!

Homemade cakes (and cupcakes!) are the best. 🙂 Good for you for keeping it special that way. So much tastier (and most likely healthier) than those grocery store bakery cakes!
