Metal in the Microwave
So you’re probably thinking that I’m off my rocker by now, and you may be right, but not about this! Actually, I thought my Science Professor was off his rocker when he told me this! It took me sometime to give it a try too! This went against everything that I had been taught! He was telling me that I didn’t have to stand there with my fork or spoon in my hand while I heated my food, I could put the spoon/fork on the plate/bowl and turn my microwave ON! My mom always told me NOT to put ANYTHING metal into the microwave, but here stands my Professor telling me that it is OK! Made me think that maybe he was knocking back a few between classes…if you know what I mean. But he did seem to be a pretty knowledgeable guy, so I decided that one time couldn’t hurt…or could it…well, you never know until you try, the most it could do was fry my microwave..right??
Well let’s just say, I was more than a little hesitant the first time I tried this. I put the metal utensil on my plate in the microwave, pressed start, and ran to the other side of the kitchen. And waited for my microwave to explode! But it didn’t!! And I have done this ever since, and that was 8 years ago! Dh has just now bought into the idea and started, at times, putting his spoon/fork in the microwave, even though he has watched me do this our entire 7 years of marriage! My mom tries to stop me before I press the start to remind me that I accidently put my spoon/fork in the microwave, she hasn’t bought into the idea yet either. It’s so funny to see the expression on peoples’ faces, who have never seen me do this before, when they see me close the door of the microwave and they realize that there is metal in there and I am going to turn it ON!
Now just so you know, you CANNOT put thin metal in the microwave, such as aluminum foil, bread ties, etc. It has to be thick, like spoons and forks, although, I can’t remember why…it has been 8 years for pete’s sake. And you may be wondering if the fork/spoon gets really hot, and the answer is, the only time it gets “ouchy” hot is if I heat something for 5 minutes or longer on high, and even then it cools very quickly! Most of the time it is a bit warm, but can be handled right away!
Putting metal in the microwave works for me!

When I read this, I did wonder if you were crazy, lol! I have always heard not to do that too. I know I put something in there one time that made the microwave go crazy, but I can’t remember what it was. Maybe I can get brave enough to try this.
How funny, Nancy!! Your comment made me laugh!! I felt the same about my Science professor, but it does work! Just do not put in the thin, smaller metals, I have only done this with my spoon and fork!

I wasn’t sure about it the first time either, b/c mama always told me NOT to do this! I have been doing it for 8 years now, and I am still using the same microwave, and the only thing that I have “fried” in that microwave, in those 8 years, are some taco shells that I forgot about! But do not put aluminum foil, bread ties, and other thin, small metals in the microwave…I have only done this with spoons and forks.

Yes, I am SERIOUS…lol! But only do this with your spoon or fork! Do NOT do this with other thinner, smaller metals!

My microwave actually came with a metal shelf in it. I thought it was crazy when we first got the microwave, but we’ve had it for a few years now and it hasn’t blown up so apparently it works.
YES, I had forgot that I have seen some like that!!! See, I’m NOT crazy..lol!!

I’m so paranoid about this I even refused to use the metal shelf that came in my microwave…lol. But I hate my microwave, so I’m going to try this. If it blows up (I really do believe you that it won’t) then I get a new microwave. And if it doesn’t, well then I just learned one awesome tip. Thanks!

That’s funny! Well, I regret to tell you that a spoon or fork will NOT break your microwave…so you may not get a new one that way! 😮 ..sorry!

The house we’re buying (fingers crossed) has a microwave with a shelf. When I saw it, I asked my realtor to please explain this to me, because it seemed crazy. She said it was fine.

I was never told not to put silverware in the microwave, so I’ve been doing that since my family got our first one. That’s probably going on 25 years now.
I always forget that people are afraid of this and have had to calm down friends and coworkers on multiple occasions.
